Build multilingual RAG with local retrieval and MandAPI

Compute neural embeddings and reranking locally, then let MandAPI answer from the selected passages.

Read the prompt
Build multilingual RAG in my app with local neural retrieval and MandAPI only for answer generation. Use SentenceTransformer sentence-transformers/paraphrase-multilingual-MiniLM-L12-v2 and CrossEncoder cross-encoder/mmarco-mMiniLMv2-L12-H384-v1, or my explicitly selected compatible local model paths. Preserve the app and keep the real key server-side. Implement a --demo mode with fixed stubs and no downloads, heavy imports or API calls. The --live path must use normalized neural embeddings, top-k retrieval, CrossEncoder reranking and one POST to https://api.mandapi.com/v1/chat/completions with an exact account-visible MODEL_ID. Do not substitute TF-IDF and call it neural retrieval, and do not invent MandAPI embeddings/rerank endpoints. Check input token limits, keep stable source IDs and ask the model to answer only from retrieved passages with citations. Prepare installation and weight-download steps for me to run; do not download large weights or execute paid inference automatically. Report offline validation separately from neural and live results.

Keep retrieval local

This example uses real neural models: sentence-transformers/paraphrase-multilingual-MiniLM-L12-v2 for embeddings and cross-encoder/mmarco-mMiniLMv2-L12-H384-v1 for reranking. Both model cards include multilingual use, including English and Spanish. MandAPI only generates the final answer through Chat Completions; this recipe does not use or promise a MandAPI embeddings or rerank service.

The pipeline is: short passages → normalized embeddings → top five candidates → CrossEncoder reranking → top three passages → one answer with source IDs. Similarity and reranker scores are ranking values, not calibrated confidence.

Save the complete example

Use Python 3.10 or newer. Save this as rag.py. The included Spanish library facts are a tiny sample corpus; they also let you try an English question against Spanish sources.

Run the offline demo first

bash
python rag.py --demo

--demo uses a fixed retrieval fixture and an answer stub. It needs only Python's standard library: it does not import neural libraries, download model weights or contact MandAPI. It checks the example's control flow and output shape, not retrieval quality.

Prepare real local retrieval

When you choose to use the live path, create your own virtual environment and install the reviewed package version:

bash
python -m venv .venv
# Activate .venv for your shell, then:
python -m pip install "sentence-transformers==6.2.0"

On Windows PowerShell, activate with .\.venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1; on Bash, use source .venv/bin/activate. On first live use, the library retrieves the named model weights unless you supply already downloaded local directories with --embedder and --reranker. These files are substantially larger than this example script; obtain them yourself when ready.

The embedder has a short input window. The script rejects inputs beyond its reported token limit instead of silently truncating them. For your own knowledge base, save a UTF-8 JSON array of short chunks, each with a unique id and text, as docs.json. Keep a source URL or document location alongside each ID in your application.

A minimal docs.json for the sample question is:

json
[
  {
    "id": "D1",
    "text": "La biblioteca abre de lunes a viernes de 09:00 a 18:00."
  },
  {
    "id": "D2",
    "text": "Los sábados, la biblioteca abre de 10:00 a 14:00."
  },
  {
    "id": "D3",
    "text": "El plazo de préstamo de los libros es de catorce días."
  }
]

Generate the answer with MandAPI

Set MANDAPI_API_KEY privately in your terminal as in the quickstart. Choose an exact account-visible chat MODEL_ID, then run:

bash
python rag.py --live --docs docs.json --model MODEL_ID --question "When does the library open on Saturday?"

The live command loads local neural models and makes one chargeable MandAPI request after retrieval. Only the selected passages and question are sent for generation. Inspect source_ids, compare the answer with those passages and review the matching MandAPI usage.

Evaluate and fix

If the local model cannot load, check package installation, weight availability and the model path. If the token check rejects a passage, split it into smaller chunks. If retrieval picks the wrong facts, inspect candidates before changing the answer model. Citation-shaped text does not prove support: verify each cited claim against the retrieved passages, and include questions the corpus cannot answer.

This guide has passed syntax and offline-stub checks. No model weights were downloaded and no neural inference or live MandAPI answer was run for its preparation.
