# Review a selected code diff with MandAPI

Preview a small staged diff, then request a second opinion without changing or committing code.

## Choose the review boundary

Use a second model to inspect a small change after your normal local checks. This recipe reads only staged changes for one to five explicitly named source files. It does not install hooks, edit files, run proposed commands, create commits or publish a review.

The script limits the diff to 20,000 UTF-8 bytes and disables external Git diff helpers. Review the preview for secrets or unrelated changes before sending it. The byte limit is a request-size guard, not a token count or cost estimate.

## Save and preview the script

Save the following as review_diff.py. It needs Python 3.10 or later; Git is needed for a real staged diff. The synthetic demo runs without a key, Git repository or SDK.

Only already staged changes appear. This helper reviews existing regular files; inspect staged deletions separately. The script does not stage anything. Literal Git paths prevent a supplied file name from expanding into a broader path pattern.

## Request a review when ready

Install the OpenAI Python client with python -m pip install openai. Set MANDAPI_API_KEY in your terminal's secret environment and MANDAPI_MODEL_ID to a Chat Completions model available to your key. See the [chat quickstart](/en/cookbook/get-started/chat-app/) for setup.

Add --send to the same selected-file command to make one paid inference request. Choose a model supporting the shown Chat Completions parameters. No fallback or automatic retry is configured.

Treat the answer as a hypothesis. A model only sees the selected patch, so it can miss surrounding behavior or infer context incorrectly. Confirm findings against the code and a relevant check before making changes.

## Check the result

The demo must print PREVIEW ONLY and make no request. Empty staged changes and oversized patches must stop before inference. A real review should identify evidence in the supplied diff and a way to check it; a fluent answer is not evidence that tests ran.
